A crack appears across the sumptuous tomb of the golden boy-king Tutankhamun and the West does nothing to help cash-strapped Egyptian archaeologists. Chunks of King Sethis’ finely painted tomb fall to the floor and Western Egyptologists shrug their shoulders and blame floods and tourism. In this controversial feature-length documentary, agent provocateur John Romer travels to The Valley of the Kings. Once there, he sets about investigating a scandal in the history of conservation. As the programme unravels, he reveals how respected Egyptologists have contributed to the plunder and destruction of the monuments they profess to admire. Is their policy of ‘publish or perish’ a recipe for disaster or the only way to preserve the monuments for eternity?
